Aeion Tax + Avalara AvaTax
Aeion's tax engine computes rates locally by default — no per-calculation fees, no external dependency. For jurisdictions where you'd rather pull a live rate from Avalara's own database, plug in your AvaTax credentials as an optional fallback provider. Same mechanism as the built-in TaxJar and ZipTax fallbacks — local computation stays the default, Avalara is only called when you explicitly configure it as the active provider.
What This Integration Actually Does
This connects to Avalara's Tax Rates by Address lookup — the same free-tier endpoint AvaTax offers without requiring a full AvaTax subscription. It's a live rate lookup, not the full AvaTax transaction-and-filing platform:

FAQ
No — the rate-lookup endpoint this integration calls works with a free Avalara developer account. Avalara's paid tiers (CertCapture, Returns, full transaction tracking) aren't part of this integration.
No. This is a live rate lookup only. If you need exemption-certificate management, nexus monitoring, or automated multi-state filing, those still run directly through Avalara — Aeion doesn't call those APIs.
Local computation uses rates you've configured in Aeion (manually or imported); it's free and works offline. This integration instead asks Avalara for a live rate at the moment of calculation — useful if you want Avalara's own rate database as the source of truth for specific jurisdictions without running their full platform.
Aeion logs the failure and falls back to your local rate table — checkout never blocks on an external API being unreachable.
Aeion has one active external provider at a time. Avalara, TaxJar, ZipTax, and API Ninjas all plug into the same fallback slot — pick whichever's rate coverage or pricing fits your jurisdictions best.
